If you want to grow your business, you need the right workers. However, it appears that construction bosses may be struggling to find them. A new survey has revealed a shortage of skilled, qualified or experienced technical staff in construction. Read on for a summary of the findings and how they are affecting the industry.
State of Trade Survey
The Build UK State of Trade Survey, undertaken by Glenigan, aims to find areas for potential improvement in the construction industry. It looks at each of the following for construction contractors:
· Enquiry levels
· Output levels
· Outstanding work
· Anticipated work
· Recruitment
· Capacity, costs and prices
· Payments and disputes
The most notable of the findings comes in the recruitment section of the survey. Contractors encountered fewer difficulties recruiting for roles such as scaffolders, plasterers and general labourers. However, there appears to be a shortage of management skills, provided by technical or supervisory staff. The survey lists three reasons for the difficulty in filling these kinds of vacancies:
· 62% stated a lack of required skills
· 54% said candidates had a lack of experience
· 48% blamed a lack of qualifications
Wider effect
Also amongst the findings was an increase in labour costs, labour shortages and 16% of companies reporting late completion of projects. It seems a lack of staff, specifically those with management skills, is causing problems elsewhere for construction businesses.
However, the survey suggests that growth is coming. There were more contractors reporting an increase than those reporting a decrease for output and work-in-hand, with 25% reporting an increase in enquiries. The majority of contractors expect workloads to rise short-term, with 56% expecting growth in the next year.
Given this potential growth, the worker shortage needs to be solved sooner rather than later. If companies reach maximum capacity, like the survey suggests they are heading towards, it will restrict their growth.
